Cabot Tower and Brandon Hill Bristol | Cabot Tower History | Brandon Hill Park | Visit Bristol

Cabot Tower, set in the gorgeous parkland of Brandon Hill near Park Street in the West End, is a 105ft tower built-in 1897 to commemorate John Cabot’s famous voyage from Bristol and the continent of North America four hundred years earlier.

Brandon Hill
Brandon Hill is the oldest park in Bristol, where you can enjoy views over the city and the Harbourside area. It is located just off Park Street in the West End and features a children’s play area, beautiful paths, and a nature conservation area making it an ideal spot for couples and families. It is also home to what is considered the icon of Bristol’s skyline, Cabot Tower.

Cabot Tower
It was designed by the Bristol architect William Venn Gough and paid for by public subscription. The tower is built from red sandstone covered with cream Bath stone. It’s free to climb up the steep, twisting steps of the tower, which is open daily.

It was shut in 2007 after cracks appeared in the tower and reopened to the public on 16 August 2011, after vital work to make it safe was completed, and visitors can once again make the rewarding trip to climb the spiral staircase to enjoy panoramic views of Bristol.

Tsarska Bistritsa Bulgaria | History of Bulgaria | Third Bulgarian Kingdom | Castles in Bulgaria

Tsarska Bistritsa is a former palace of the rulers of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom, situated in southwestern Bulgaria, high in the Rila Mountains, just above the resort of Borovets and near the banks of the Bistritsa River. Discover with us an important part of the history of the last Bulgarian royal dynasty.

Tsarska Bistritsa Palace is definitely one of the most historical places to visit in Borovets area when the ski season is over or during the summer, to enjoy its magnificent garden. Located at 1km from the main street of the familiarly ski resort, in a vast and very peaceful domain, the palace was built by King Ferdinand I between 1898 and 1914. It is a historical landmark of Borovets which served the function of a hunting lodge for the kings Ferdinad I and Boris III.

Here, on the 28th of August 1943, Queen Giovanna received the information that her husband, Boris III, was suffering from a mysterious illness. It was here that six-year-old Simeon and nine-year-old Marie-Louise saw their father for the last time. The hunting lodge was nationalized after 1945, when Bulgaria became a Communist state. The democratic changes of 1989 led to the controversial return of the palace to Simeon II, the last monarch of Bulgaria and afterwards a politician, in October 2002.
The architecture of Tsarska Bistritsa combines, in the spirit of Romanticism, elements of the authentic Bulgarian National Revival style with other European architectural styles.
Sadly, the palace is no longer open to the public.

The hunting lodge of Tsarska Bistritsa holds a large collection of hunting trophies, gathered during half a century. Most of the animals are hunted by Boris III, but there are some trophies from prince Kyril and princess Nadezhda, who loved to go hunting with the rest of the men.
Fortunately, the palace buildings are not the only tourist attractions to see. Here, you can discover a very nice Art Gallery, a permanent exhibition of 60 plein air paintings by prominent Bulgarian painters.
Discover also a cute and very simple Chapel built for the wedding of Princess Kalina.

Then the beautiful garden, where it is nice and relaxing to sit here and there. It offers a very quiet and peaceful moment in communion with nature. There are many rare trees in the domain, brought by King Ferdinand of distant places in the world. Tsarska Bistritsa Palace is a place to discover during your next trip in Borovets.

Sofia Bulgaria | Sofia Graffiti Tour | Things to see in Sofia | Travel to Bulgaria

Recently, Sofia has become an open-air art space, thanks to graffiti: they appear here and there on a facade, transform a crumbling wall, turn a building into a futuristic scene with amazing characters, gather the eyes of passers-by and are painted by real artists.

00:00 – Introduction
00:32 – Work of the artist Bozhidar Simeonov – Bozko. The graffiti artist painted the wall of the Sofia Inspectorate next to the National Opera. It took 9 days for the artist to paint this big wall.

01:08 – Known to the Bulgarians as Nasimo, Stanislav Trifonov is recognized as one of the pioneers of Eastern European street art culture, as well as one of the most popular mural painters in the Balkans.
Nasimo started painting in the early 90’s. 25 years later, his works adorn countries such as Britain, Germany, Russia, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Poland, India, China and almost all countries in the Balkans, sometimes spreading to the facades of 10-storey buildings.

01:46 – The 200-square-meter Serdica Tulip mural is located near the Sredica metro station on the central Maria-Luisa Boulevard, and its authors are the world-famous artists Arsek & Erase.
The Serdika Tulip project was initiated by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bulgaria. The initiative aims to illustrate in a modern way the friendly relations between Bulgaria and the Netherlands, including various elements specific to both countries.

02:48 – Painted by the artist JahOne and the team of the Visionary Foundation with graffiti, symbolizing the hope of blood cancer patients that innovations in the treatment of this group of diseases can give them new life.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about blood cancer and current opportunities for diagnosis and treatment, as well as to draw public attention to the problems of patients suffering from these diseases.

03:22 – Graffiti created by Rays street in memory of Krastyo Petrov Mirski, Bulgarian drama director and pedagogue, professor at the Higher Institute of Theater Arts.

03:53 – Work of Nasimo. The beautiful graffiti of a Bulgarian girl dressed in a Bulgarian national costume appeared on 55 Sandor Petyofi Street at the end of May 2016. The name of the work is “God’s Gift” and it represents Rada, a Bulgarian bride, and the beauty and Bulgarian traditions.

00:39 – Decumanus Maximus, one of the two main streets of the city of Serdica
01:15 – This remarkable, partly covered excavation site
01:31 – Serdica metro station

Remains of the ancient fortress of Serdica are exhibited in the subway between the Presidency and the Council of Ministers in the center of Sofia.

The town of Serdica or Serdnopolis was founded in the second millennium BC.
Serdica was the favourite city of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great (306 – 337), who liked to say “Serdica is my Rome”. It was in Serdica that the decision was made to move the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire to Constantinople.

In the area of the central metro station “Serdica” there were luxury villas with sewerage, plumbing and paved streets. Nowadays, during archaeological excavations, remains of residential and public buildings, pottery and other finds were found.

Under the open sky, you will see a whole archeological site with the foundations of houses from the ancient city of Serdica. In this section the discovered archeological structures are exhibited in their natural form. Parts of the pool, underfloor heating (hypocaust), toilets (latrines), parts of the premises and sewerage can be seen. This is how the big open-air museum was formed, which shows a part of beautiful Ancient Serdica.

This remarkable, partly covered excavation site, situated just above the Serdica metro station, displays fragments of eight streets, an early Christian basilica, baths and houses dating from the 4th to 6th centuries.
Serdica Metro Station – On its platforms, in glass windows, are exhibited archeological finds from antiquity.

Getting off the train at the Serdica II station, whether heading north or south, you can not miss the series of glass-cased displays. Collectively they tell the story of Sofia’s past from the Neolithic to the construction of the metro station. With an excellent set of maps and informative labels in both Bulgarian and English, these exhibits give a good introduction to the archaeology of Sofia.
If you are not travelling by metro but are looking at the Roman ruins outside the station, we highly recommend taking some time to go down to the platforms.

You can buy a ticket for only ‎1.60 leva (around 80 euro cents). The cheapest museum ticket in Sofia, if not Bulgaria!

The Balmoral Show | The Balmoral Show 2021 | Northern Ireland Agriculture | Lisburn Northern Ireland

The Balmoral Show is a fabulous family day out! People travel from all over Northern Ireland, Ireland the UK mainland and around the world to attend. We filmed this at the Balmoral Show 2021.

Due to restrictions, the event last year was unable to go ahead so it was fantastic to see that extra measures were able to be put in place this year to allow it to go ahead.

The Balmoral Show was formed back in 1854, when the North East Agricultural Association held the first shows at Belfast Corporation Markets between 1855 and 1895. In 1872, the first three-day show was held in Ormeau Park in association with the Royal Agricultural Society of Ireland.

In 1894, the showgrounds at Balmoral were purchased and works were completed just in time for the opening of the annual show and that was when the show was renamed since then to be referred to as Balmoral Show, which happened in 1896.

This year’s show was hosted at the Eikon Exhibition Centre in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

At the festival, there is something for all the family with activities, local food, music and more. It’s a fantastic show for the agricultural industry.

The countdown is already on for The Balmoral Show 2022!

00:29 – Saint George the Victorious Chapel and Mausoleum
00:59 – Skobelev park
01:22 – Tsar Aleksander II House Museum
01:40 – Water cascade

Over the years, Pleven has undergone various transformations. The spirit and energy it carries from past generations have saturated the city with indescribable charm and individuality. This is evidenced by many cultural monuments and military history museums, which remind us of the glorious history of the city. The atmosphere of Pleven is complemented by the richness of natural landmarks, parks, and water pools typical of this region.

Panorama Pleven Epopee 1877
Panorama “Pleven Epopee 1877” – Pleven city was constructed to commemorate 100th anniversary from Pleven battles during the Russian -Turkish War in 1877 – 1878, and the city liberation on 10th of December 1877, as well. The panorama is in “Skobelev” park, on the authentic battlefield where, during the third attack to Pleven on 11th-12th of September 1877, Russian army carried out the fiercest battles to take over Pleven. The Panorama was officially opened on 10th of December 1977.

Saint George the Victorious Chapel and Mausoleum
Mausoleum-chapel “St. George the Victorious” commemorates the heroes – i.e., 31 000 soldiers and officers of the multinational Russian imperial army and 4500 of Romanian army, who perished and were wounded during the Russian -Turkish War in 1887-1878 and during Pleven Epopee 1877.
Mausoleum is in Bulgarian ecclesiastical style with Byzantine architectural elements. On Northern and Southern mausoleum sides are embedded memorial granite plates disclosing the titles of Russian and Romanian squadrons, the officers’ names, and soldiers’ number who perished in the battles for Pleven. Above the entrance wooden door artistically carved by prof. Ian Travnitski can be seen as a high relief of “St. George the Victorious” made by the sculptor Zheko Spiridonov.
The Mausoleum is a cultural monument of national importance.

Skobelev park
The memorial park-museum was established in the period 1904 – 1907 after the initiative of “Tsar Alexander II – The Liberator” Committee with chairman Stoyan Zaimov. The park is located South -West from Pleven, on the authentic place where the detachment of General M.D.Skobelev fought and where the most fierce battles for Pleven liberation took place during the third attack to Pleven on 11th – 12th of September, 1877. On these green heights perished nearly 6 500 people of general M.D.Skobelev detachment which numbered 13 000 people. Since then, this valley housing the Zelenogorski brook was named the “Valley of the Dead”.

In the park, the centre was constructed a fraternal mound – bone vault. A marble sarcophagus in it contains bones of the Russian warriors from general M. D. Skobelev detachment.
Tsar Aleksander II House Museum

On 11th of December 1877 in this house owned by Pleven merchant Ivan Vatsov, the Russian emperor Alexander II was welcomed. Here he was given a letter of appreciation by Pleven citizens and in the presence of the great prince Nikolay Nikolaevich, Romanian prince Carol I and Russian military minister Milyutin had a meeting with the captivated Turkish marshal Osman Pasha.
Preserved is the authentic arrangement in the guest room where emperor Alexander II was welcomed. In two of the rooms, the ceilings are still original, while the wallpapers were restored after preserved original elements.

Water cascade
The water cascade in Pleven is water complex that has more than 1,500 m2 of water-covered area with more than 10 waterfalls, fountains, 3 water mirrors, differently modelled water streams and splashes. It has been built in Pleven downtown in 1982. The complex is very beautiful during the night with its part-coloured spectacular lighting.
